Open Question For Republicans

Publicola:

Bush & the current crop of republicans are in love with the idea of power. They also seem to think that bigger government is okay when they’re in control. The “who else are they gonna vote for?” attitude seems to be alleviating any fears of repercussions for their actions.

That’s a fair observation, but:

Who else are you gonna vote for?

Let’s see:
Democrats? No, too evil.
Libertarians? No, too crazy and too loser-y.
Other third parties? No, see “Libertarians” above.

Well.

Looks like you-all will be reluctantly going to the polls in November ‘08 and making your marks beside whoever (and note that it doesn’t really matter who) has a big “R” beside his or her name, and the reason is that whoever it is won’t be quite as bad as whoever has the “D” by their name.

Not quite.

But don’t go thinking that they’ll be “good”, any more than George Bush has been “good”. All that they’ll be is not a Democrat. And for the vast majority of you, that’ll be good enough.

For the few of you who think otherwise though, you might want to consider a different course of action.

What makes you think I intend to vote for ANYBODY in November of 2008. What makes you think I’m so violent-natured that I’ll go to the polls at all. After all, voting is just giving your proxy for somebody to make “laws”, which somebody else will enforce by pointing guns at people. Count me out.

while you can argue about voting in terms of rational ignorance, or it being an act of violence, the idea that one vote won’t matter as a reasoning against it is wrong. That’s like saying, no one should play in a big orchestra, because their instrument will make little to no difference in the overall sound. But if everyone thought that, nothing would be played. Plus playing is a private cost with a public benefit, so isn’t it even a worse idea?

“. But if everyone thought that, nothing would be played.”

Whether or not others vote in no way depends on whether you do.

Except that, as the second link there shows, one vote doesn’t matter. Not in the slightest.

    Bill,

“What makes you think I intend to vote for ANYBODY in November of 2008. “

Nothing. This was directed at republicans, which I’m pretty sure doesn’t include you.

““. But if everyone thought that, nothing would be played.”

sure it does, they’re both collective actions. others can still play their instruments if you don’t.

Hah, Americans have it easy. Brazil has upcoming ellections. We can vote for: A Tortkyst, a Stalinist, a Leninist, a Trotkyst-Leninist, a sitting president with ties to terrorists and who is a puppet of Hugo Chavez, and… a moderate leftist candidate. Oh, we have a brazilian version of Lyndon Larouche. Yay for Brazil.

  8. Delance Says:

(I’m voting for the moderate leftist)
