Thanks, Ron, Now Shut Up

Ronald Bailey over at Reason is talking about the need for consumer-driven health care. Well and good. He mentions the problems of the current healthcare – which are legion – and says that a solution is needed. His solution?

My advice to President Bush on how really to jumpstart consumer-driven health care: mandatory private health insurance. Poor Americans would be offered a voucher with which they would buy private health coverage. Such vouchers could be paid for by abolishing Medicaid and the State Children’s Health Insurance Programs.

But they won’t be, Ron, and you know it, because you know what underlies all of this: the barrel of a gun. Why you think the solution is to point the gun in everyone’s face is beyond me, but you’re either clearly ignorant or clearly evil about this.

The State Legislator is the Child Grown Strong

Missouri Lawmaker Seeks to Ban Cold Beer Sales

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — A state senator wants to force Missouri stores to sell warm beer. Under a bill by Sen. Bill Alter, grocery and convenience stores would risk losing their liquor licenses if they sold beer colder than 60 degrees. The intent is to cut down on drunken driving by making it less tempting to pop open a beer after leaving the store.

“The only reason why beer would need to be cold is so that it can be consumed right away,” Alter, who has been a police offer for more than 20 years, said Thursday.

He said the idea came from a fifth-grade student in Jefferson County who was participating in a program to teach elementary students about state government. He sought their suggestions for new laws and chose the cold beer ban from a list of the top three ideas.

There are a few things disturbing about this article:

1. “He [the state senator] sought their [fifth-graders] suggestions for new laws…” A state senator is asking ten-year olds for ideas about law? What’s next, state-provided Mountain Dew fountains in public places?

2. Hey, I like cold beer. Fuck you, pal.

3. Does anyone actually crack a beer open on the ride home? And if they do, is that enough to get anyone drunk enough to cause an accident? Come on.

4. I really like cold beer. Double fuck you, pal.

Hat tip: The Agitator

With Friends Like These…

Despite Jane Galt’s fundamental cluelessness about the NYC transit strike, she manages to take her Commie “to each according to his need” rhetoric to its historical conclusion:

While the strike has so far deprived me of one free lunch and drinks with some friends from grad school, even I was tempted to endorse one acquaintance’s plan to go to Seattle and Cleveland and encourage the fire departments that serve these yahoos to go on strike before engaging in a spot of selective arson.

Burn out the wreckers of the glorious People’s Transit System!

And this is what passes for libertarianism?

Refusing to be a Refusenik

Along the road to martyrdom,Claire Wolfe reaffirms an old lament in An American Refusenik, while at Strike the Root Per Byland lays out a better roadmap.

I live for myself first and foremost, and then come my family and friends. I do not care to save the world if I can find freedom for myself and the ones I love without doing it. Why should I? I’m nobody’s slave; I do as I please simply because I want to. It would be nice to live in a free world, but I don’t think it is worth the trouble. I’d rather be free now, on my own, than break free along with millions of strangers 40 or 50 years from now.

Isn’t this what individualism is all about? One has to make one’s own choices, for oneself and the ones willing to follow. If they do not want the freedom I want, then why the hell should I spend my time and money on making them share my ideals and go with me? I’m no selfless Samaritan or a slave of the peoples; I’m my own.

As libertarians, we need to break free from the collectivist worldview of this Savior Complex. There is no reason to work day and night to liberate people you don’t know, never will know, and who sincerely do not appreciate what you are trying to do for them.

Most NT worthy attitude.

Consent of About Half

[T]o secure [life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness], governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed . . . Declaration of Independence.

As a market anarchist, I have no problem with this statement.

The problem is when “consent of the governed” actually isn’t consent. Iraq’s constitution is a good example of “consent” in action. 63% of Iraq’s adult populace turned out, 78% voted in favour. That’s 49%. 49% of the adult population just bound the other 51% (and their children) to a form of governance they did not choose, and in 2.5m cases, actively rejected. This is consent of the governed?

We are the people of Iraq, who in all our forms and groupings undertake to establish our union freely and by choice . . . Preamble, Constitution of Iraq, AP translation (emphasis mine).

Or not, as the case may be.

A Wonderful Vision Of The Future

Isn’t this nice? (Bolding mine)

It’s become more and more apparent to me over the past five years that all the activism and non-violent protesting in the world will do precisely squat. When you’re dealing with evil people who have no shame, the old rules of the game don’t and, indeed, can’t apply if you have any hope for success. Hundreds of thousands of people have marched, millions of letters have been written, tens of millions of votes cast, and hundreds of trillions of electrons expended pontificating on blogs…for nothing. Nothing has changed. Nothing will change. Not unless it comes in the form of something akin to the French Revolution.

We need terror. We need horror. We need the streets running awash in rivers of blood of these thugs and criminals and zealots. Activism didn’t prevent 60,000 deaths in Vietnam. All the activism of the Civil Rights era has gotten African Americans precisely nowhere. Segregation may not be the law of the land anymore, but it’s still the de facto state of America.

When y’all want to start throwing molotovs and sniping from windows come and talk to me.

If and when the various loudmouths on both the left and right ever get their Glorious People’s Revolution, I want to be far, far away.

Hotel Communism

This is the Ryugyong (“Capital of Willows”) Hotel in Pyongyang, North Korea. In 1987, Great Leader Kim Il-Sung started building this monstrosity. No one’s exactly sure why North Korea started building this eyesore, but in a communist dictatorship, it’s hard to explain why the government does anything. Work on the hotel is believed to have stopped in 1992, during a brutal famine.

Japanese newspapers have estimated that the hotel’s construction cost $750m, which would have been about 2% of NK’s Gross Domestic Product. The hotel stands 330 m tall (about 1070 ft.). The crazy angle of the roof is 75 degrees.

Number of customers since work ceased? 0. The building is structurally unsound and lacks electrical wiring and bathroom fixtures.

According to reports of those who have visited Pyongyang, tour guides act as though the 1070 ft. building doesn’t exist.

“You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.”

He’s Watching You

Our friend Radley Balko muses:

Something tells me the real Superman would be disappointingly leftist.

I wonder what Balko would think about this:

Cover of Red Son comic

Basic premise: what if Superman landed in a Ukrainian commune instead and fought for truth, justice, and the communist way? What happens when a man with superpowers and a desire to do good for people (despite their wishes) takes the reigns of the Soviet Union?

Casey Sheehan – Just Following Orders

The big anti-war tent outside the Crawford ranch is on its way to surpassing the Winchester Mystery House for blind stairwells and bizarre additions. Today Mother Sheehan added a few more curious wings to Camp Casey, welcoming in Hamas, tax protesters, impeachment advocates, and those who would prosecute American military leaders for war crimes.

It’s inevitable that those who mock and villify Mother Sheehan will be quick to criticize her for corpse dragging. They’ll make statements to the effect that she’s defiling her son’s memory by making him the centerpiece of her roadside freak show, but, as Radley Balko points out, how can they know the mind of Casey Sheehan better than his own mother? How can they know that Army Spc. Sheehan did not feel that he was complicit in war crimes? Certainly he volunteered to participate in Bush’s criminal war, but he was, after all, just following the orders of the architects of war crimes. He was only doing their bidding, albeit quite willingly, when he died in Iraq.

While it’s true that poor Casey’s corpse would have fared better had it been dropped from a helicopter onto the streets of Mogadishu, if Mother Sheehan wants to enlist her own son into a posthumous war against George Bush, who is Michelle Malkin to malign her for it?

note: Yet another weird addition has materialized along the Crawford roadside attraction in the form of David Duke’s stamp of approval. Mother Sheehan’s demand for Israel’s withdrawl from Palestine has met with the former Grand Dragon’s passionate endorsement of the protest.

I’ve been so far out on the fringe for so long, now, that it’s a shock to get a glimpse of what some people think.

If you can call it that.

Read the comments at Jardine’s place. A person like that would dump you, bound and gagged, into a freshly-dug ditch alongside various and sundry other Enemies Of The People and placidly shovel you under, should he be given directions to do so from the proper “authorities”.

And he’s everywhere.

“Jews will always be ostracized because of their attempts to destroy every culture that admits them.”

Now, who could that quote be from?

Why, contributor Bob Wallace*, of course:

Most “bigotry” is the act of noticing the truth.

Blacks are genetically intellectually inferior, always have been, always will be. Except for music and sports, they will always be on the bottom. They’ve never had a culture worthy of the name, never will.

Asians have an ages-old group mentality than I doubt can be eradicated. They have no creativity, and I doubt anything can be done about that, either.

There never was a Muslim Golden Age. Most of it consisted of stealing from Christians and Jews. Islam was, and always will be, an intellectually and morally dead obscenity. It is the worst thing that has happened to the world.

Jews will always be ostracized because of their attempts to destroy every culture that admits them.

Whites will always be on top, Asians right underneath them, Mexicans far below, and blacks right at the bottom.

Nearly everything in the world has been created by Western Christian civilization, especially in America since 1776.

Not really anything to add to that, I think, except to perhaps ponder on Mr. Wallace’s previous charges of cultural destruction levied at Does Mr. Wallace judge that NT is really a tool for the great Jew Conspiracy To Destroy Every Culture That Admits Them, or are we simply unwitting pawns in said Conspiracy’s machinations?

What do you think? Cast your vote in the No-Treason forum now, before filthy wetbacks and money-grubbing “neocons” destroy your culture!
